I’m entering into a different season of life now. My children have found their wings and they’re moving towards independence and I’m finding I have time to re-connect with my passions, sewing and crafts.
Some of my earliest memories involve needle and thread. In one particularly vivid memory, my preschool self is sitting on the sculpted living room carpet stitching an a-line skirt for my cloth doll. I even remember the print on the fabric. It was deep fuchsia pink cotton overprinted with a small black pattern. Very 50′s. As I sat there stitching away, I had the biggest revelation of my life: if I held the pieces right side together, stitched, then turned them around, the seams would be on the inside! A miracle! I don’t think I’ve ever lost that sense of wonder that happens through the creative process.
Here I am today, decades later (I’m not saying how many decades), excited all over again at discovering that the world around me has also rediscovered that sewing is cool. I’m blown away by the energy and creativity that is found all over the web through blogs and websites. This is my tiny contribution to the movement, my wish to give back and pass on my experiences to others and thereby spread the joy. Breathe. Smile. Create.
